My name is Ernest Dean Rothgarn of Camarillo, CA. son of Donald Rothgarn, son of Walter & Alma Rothgarn of Zumbro Falls, MN. Eric Rothgarn, on staff at UC Davis, CA., son of Roger Rothgarn, Wanda Hayes of Red Wing, MN., grand daughter of Vera Rothgarn and I are doing the Rothgarn family. All Rothgarns in the USA are directly related to Claus H. Rothgarn, born 1822 in Germany.

Following are three files created by Eric Rothgarn. One is of the Albert/August P. Rothgarn chain, one is of the Claus H. Rothgarn chain and one is a color chart, all with photos which makes it very easy to see the relationships. [Note: this all was received by a prior County Coordinator. The images and color chart were never posted, and have been lost.]

We are trying to verify the Albert/August connection (see iii below).

Born on 2 Nov 1822 in Schleiswig-Holstein, Germany. Immigrated on 26 May1882 to Castle Garden, Port of New York. Claus Hinrich died in Willow Creek Township, McHenry, North Dakota, on 21 Jan 1903; he was 80. Buried on 26 Jan 1903 in Bremen Lutheran Cemetery, Millville, Wabasha, Minnesota.

Claus Rothgarn (b. 1822) owned a house and a tract of land in Schleiswig-Holstein, Germany. [Hans's] parents and a sister [Kate] came from Germany to Minnesota in 1862 and settled with oldest son Claus. [Other immigration date: 1881]. [Other date: He came to America in 1872, through Ellis Island].[2] Claimed to have settled on his Willow Creek Twp. land 15 Jul 1886. He obtained land by pre-emption 13 May 1891. Applied for citizenship 30 Oct 1886 at Bottineau County, North Dakota.

"The Claus H. Rothgarn Family" origin Scheiswig, Holstein, Germany, is inscribed on panel 374 on the The American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island, New York Harbor. However, the Claus H. Rothgarn family did not enter through Ellis Island.

Lodi, San Joaquin, California, on 30 Nov 1927; he was 75. Buried on 3 Dec 1927 in Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery, Lodi, San Joaquin, California. Occupation: farmer.[1] Claus J. Rothgarn was first son of Claus H. Rothgarn (b. 1822). Claus Rothgarn (b. 1852) came to America in 1881 through Ellis Island [but Ellis Island didn't open for immigration until 1892].[2] 1900 census lists immigration in 1873, 27 years in America.[1] Review of available information suggests he immigrated in 1873, m. 1878, first ch. 1879, second ch. 1980, returned to Europe, and back to USA in 1881.

Meta Johanna BURTH
On 29 Nov 1878 when Claus J. was 26, he married Meta Johanna BURTH4, daughter of Christoffer BUERTH/ BURTH/BEARTH (1828-1907) & Maria Wilhelmina "Mary" ___ (1826-1906), in Wabasha, Wabasha, Minnesota. Born on 18 Aug 1860 in Wisconsin.[1],[8] Was on the census for Lodi, San Joaquin, California, on 5 Apr 1930.[9] Meta Johanna died in Wabasha County, Minnesota (prob. Millville), on 11 Jun 1956; she was 95. Buried on 19 Jun 1956 in Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery, Lodi, San Joaquin, California. Both of Meta's parents where born in Germany.[1],[8] In May 1956, at age 96, Meta was living with a daughter in Millville when her son Gustaf died in 1956 (Gustaf W. Rothgarn obituary).

Born in Dec 1854 in Germany.[1] Immigrated in 1878 to America.[1],[8] Resided in Los Gatos, California, in 1908.[10] Was on the census for Los Gatos, Redwood Twp, Santa Clara, California, on 23 Apr 1910.[11] Was on the census for Elkhorn Twp, San Joaquin, California, on 10 Jan 1920.[12] Was on the census for Elkhorn Twp, San Joaquin, California, on 10 May 1930.[13] Andreas "Andrew" died in prob. Lodi, San Joaquin, California, on 3 Mar 1938; he was 83. Buried on 5 Mar 1938 in Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery, Lodi, San Joaquin, California. Occupation: farmer.[1] He was never married.

A document dated 28 May 1897 states his age as 41, making his year of birth 1856 or 1857; tombstone and cemetery records have 1854. Died at home (809 S. School St, Lodi, San Joaquin, California) at age 83 (d. 3 Mar 1938 according to cemetery records), which makes birth date between 4 Mar 1854 and 3 Mar 1855. Claimed to have settled on his Willow Creek Twp. land 30 May 1886. He obtained land by homestead patented 3 Feb 1898. Applied for citizenship 8 Jun 1882 at Olmstead County, Minnesota.

"Andrew ROTHGARN came in Tuesday from his home at Los Gatos, Cal, for a few months visit with relatives in this county [McHenry County, ND][10]."

5. Hans Hinrich ROTHGARN (Claus)[4]

Born on 4 Jul 1862 in Schleiswig-Holstein, Germany. Immigrated in May 1881 to prob. Castle Garden, Port of New York.[1] Resided in Grafton, Walsh, North Dakota Territory, in 1886. Resided in Willow Creek Township, McHenry, North Dakota Territory, in 1887. Naturalized on 24 Oct 1890 in North Dakota. Was on the census for Willow Creek Township, McHenry, North Dakota, on 25 Apr 1910.[6] Was on the census for Willow Creek Township, McHenry, North Dakota, in Feb 1920.[3] Resided in Lodi, San Joaquin, California, in Oct 1929. Was on the census for Lodi, San Joaquin, California, on 6 Apr 1930.[14] Hans Hinrich died in Lodi, San Joaquin, California, on 29 Sep 1931; he was 69. Buried on 5 Oct 1931 in Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery, Lodi, San Joaquin, California. Occupation: farmer and McHenry County official (auditor and treasurer).

Hans was the fourth in a family of five children. Attended school in Germany until age 16 and then left his parental home to work on neighboring farms. When Hans was 18, he migrated to Olmsted County, Minnesota, and worked on farms for the next six years. (Landed at Port of New York in May 1881).

Claimed to have begun residing on his Willow Creek Twp. land 1 Jan 1887, but came to the area in 1886. He obtained land by Homestead patented 12 Nov 1894. Filed a Timber-Culture affidavit 12 Oct 1887 and received a patent on that land 6 Aug 1896. The tree claim contained 10 acres of cottonwood, boxelder and ash trees.

Applied for citizenship 11 Oct 1887 at Ramsey County, North Dakota, and received his citizenship 24 Oct 1890. He built his two-story home in Willow Creek Township in 1897. Original homestead and tree claim was 320 acres (later grew to 680 acres of farm land and 880 acres of ranch land). Elected to the McHenry board of commissioners in 1897 and served as chairman for two years. Served as McHenry County treasurer from 1901-05, and auditor from 1905-08. Ownership of the farm passed to son Ted in 1928. Retired to Lodi, California in Oct 1929.

North Dakota Secretary of State P. D. Norton issued an automobile license # 1266 to Hans H. Rothgarn of Willow City on 30 March 1912.

Sarah Marie HOFFMAN
On 11 Jan 1888 when Hans Hinrich was 25, he married Sarah Marie HOFFMAN[4], daughter of Charles August "Carl" HOFFMAN (1838->1905) & Fredericke 'Fredericka" MEYER(S) (1843-1933), in Wabasha, Wabasha, Minnesota. Henry Christofer died in Rugby, Pierce, North Dakota, on 12 May 1968; he was 88. Buried on 16 May 1968 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Willow City, Bottineau, North Dakota. Occupation: decorator (1930).

Mary BARGSTEN
On 11 Jan 1905 when Henry Christofer was 25, he married Mary BARGSTEN, daughter of Henry BARGSTEN (1863-) & Mary ___ (1864-), in Jarrets, Minnesota. Born on 13 Jul 1884 in Hallenbeck, Germany. Immigrated in 1888.[8] Mary died in Rugby, Pierce, North Dakota, on 8 Jun 1975; she was 90. Buried on 12 Jun 1975 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Willow City, Bottineau, North Dakota. At the age of three, Mary, with her parents, came to America and settled near Zumbrota, Minnesota (Mary Rothgarn obituary).

Born on 3 Dec 1880 in Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota.[4] Resided in North Dakota, in 1902. Resided in Minot, Ward, North Dakota, in 1945. Gustaf/Gustav Wilhelm "Gus" died in prob. Minot, Ward, North Dakota, on 5 Mar 1956; he was 75. Buried on 9 Mar 1956 in Rosehill Cemetery. Gustav and Tillie lived at Willow City, N.D., then farmed west of Glenburn.[16]

On 29 Nov 1906 when Gustaf/Gustav Wilhelm "Gus" was 25, he married Ottillie Sophia "Tillie" ERDMAN, daughter of August ERDMAN (1846-1909) & Maria HIEN (1856-1941), in Willow City, Bottineau, North Dakota. Born on 13 Feb 1879 in Germany. Ottillie Sophia "Tillie" died in Minot, Ward, North Dakota, on 2 Mar 1966; she was 87.

Kate J. "Katie" married James William NOLAN Sr.. Was on the census for Oakwood, Wabasha, Minnesota, in 1930.[8]

11. Meta Louise "Louise" ROTHGARN (Claus, Claus)[1] Born on 6 Jan 1888 in Millville, Wabasha, Minnesota. Meta Louise "Louise" died in Lake City, Wabasha, Minnesota, on 6 Sep 1970; she was 82. Buried on 9 Sep 1970 in Millville Cemetery, Millville, Wabasha, Minnesota. Religion: Church of Christ.

Louise was enumerated in the 1920 federal census as widow McTellier with 3 year old son Carl, living with Claus and Meta. Carl's father was born in Minnesota and his native tounge is Irish. In same census, future husband Edwin Rahrman is living with his parents at nearby farm.[3] Bef 1920 when Meta Louise "Louise" was 31, she first married Mr. McTELLIER3. Born in Minnesota.

Aft Jan 1920 when Meta Louise "Louise" was 31, she second married Edwin RAHRMAN, son of Joseph RAHRMAN (1869-1919) & Mathilda K. ___ (1870-1950). Born on 30 Dec 1898 in Minnesota.[1] Was on the census for Hyde Park Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota, in 1900. Was on the census for Hyde Park Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota, in 1920.[3] Edwin died in Lake City, Wabasha, Minnesota, in Jan 1983; he was 84. Buried in Millville Cemetery, Oakwood Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota.

 

12. Walter Andrew ROTHGARN (Claus, Claus)[1] Born on 17 Feb 1890 in Wabasha, Minnesota. Was on the census for Hyde Park Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota, in 1914.[7] Was on the census for Hyde Park Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota, on 29 Jan 1920.[23] Walter Andrew died in Goodhue or Wabasha County, Minnesota, on 12 Dec 1962; he was 72. Buried in Millville Cemetery, Oakwood Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota.

On 31 Dec 1913 when Walter Andrew was 23, he married Alma Anna Katie ADLER, daughter of Frank ADLER & Katharine "Mary" WINTER, in Millville, Wabasha, Minnesota. Born on 17 Dec 1891 in Minnesota.[22],[3] Alma Anna Katie died in Goodhue County, Minnesota, on 23 Apr 1991; she was 99.[22] Buried in Millville Cemetery, Oakwood Twp, Wabasha, Minnesota. Both of Alma's parents were born in Minnesota.[3] Probably sister of Clarence Adler, Ernest Adler.

Services for Allie HADEN ROTHGARN 98, of Madera, California were held Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Lisle Funeral Home with burial in Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno, California. Mrs. ROTHGARN died Wednesday, September 22, 1999 in her home near Madera, California. She was born September 11, 1901, the eldest child of Willie BALDWIN and Dr. J.W. HADEN at Plevna. On July 22, 1950, she married Richard ROTHGARN. He preceded her in death on August 10, 1973.

She is survived by nieces Mary Jane PARSONS of Novelty; Linda DOWNS of Port Charlotte, Florida; Ruth Ann DIXSON of Shelbina; Jane DIXSON of Oregon City, Oregon; and nephew: John DARLEY of Canton. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two sisters: Helen DARLEY and Nancy REVERCOMB and one brother: Levi HADEN.

She attended school at Plevna Elementary, Shelbina High School and graduated from Central Methodist College at Fayette. She taught science at Shelbina High School then later graduated from x-ray and lab tech school in St. Louis. She worked in several states before joining the WAC's where she served as a physical therapist. She was discharged with rank of Lieutenant and returned to work in California. She has continued to farm the grape orchard selling to a winery but mostly making raisins. Allie received her 75 year Eastern Star pin in December, 1998 from the Shelbina Chapter. She was an active member of the Tehran Shrine Temple Bells from which she was named, "A Very Special Lady".

Grace Josephine ROTHGARN (Hans, Claus) was born Oct. 29, 1898, at Hansarah, the family farm west of Willow City, North Dakota, to Hans and Sarah (HOFFMAN) ROTHGARN. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Luteran Church, Willow Creek and attended parochial school there. She was reared in the area but began school at Towner, North Dakota in 1904 and continued there until 1910. Then she attended a country school in Willow Creek Township through 8th grade. She took a business course at the Lutheran Ladies Seminary, Red Wing, Minnesota for about one year and began working as a teller and bookkeeper at First National Bank, Willow City, in 1917. In 1924 she began employment with the Federal Reserve System and Comptroller of the Currency, St. Louis, Missouri. She set up bookkeeping systems to reopen banks and traveled throughout Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri setting up systems. In 1936 she began working for Defiance Building and Loan Co., Definance, Ohio and remained there until 1946, when she moved to Madera, California.

She married Abram Potter Nov. 1, 1947 at Ukiah, California. He died June 15, 1958 and is inurned in Chapel of the Light, Fresno, California. They lived in Aptos, California and in September, 1958, she moved to San Mateo, California where she later cared for her sister, Gertrude Woods, until her death in May, 1976. She continued to live in San Mateo until moving to the Harold S. Haaland Home [in Rugby, North Dakota] Sept. 6, 1990.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Willow City, and joined the Business and Professional Women's Club in St. Louis in 1924. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Keenagers Senior Citizens Club, Beresford Senior Citizens Club, and Hillsdale Senior Center Bridge Group, all San Mateo. She was a long time member of the Republican Party and enjoyed several trips throughout the world and gardening.[37]

    Funeral services for Richard H. Rothgarn, 82, of 26859 Avenue 5 1/2, a Madera County grape grower for 50 years, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Lisle Calaveras Chapel. He died Friday in a Madera hospital.

    A native of North Dakota, Rothgarn had settled in Madera in 1921. He was active in the Masonic Order.

    He is survived by his widow, Allie; two brothers, A.E. Rothgarn of Fresno and A.T. Rothgarn of Willow City, ND, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Potter and Mrs. Gertrude Woods of San Mateo. Burial will be in the Belmont Memoral Park.
